Slavery is abolished in all French territories
On this day, in 1848, France formally abolished slavery in its country as well as all colonies. However, this already happened before, in 1794 before it was reinstated by Napoleon a few years later.
The end of slavery in France came after that year's revolutionary resistance that achieved freeing over 265,000 enslaved Africans in the West Indies and Réunion. The former slaves in Africa were also granted the right to vote.
