Cornerstone of the White House is laid

Washington, D.C. was established to replace Philadelphia as the U.S. capital because of its geographical position in the centre of the new nation. On this day, in 1792, the cornerstone of the presidential residence in the newly designated capital had been laid. It was named after its white-gray freestone which contrasted with the red brick of nearby buildings.
