Children receive first vaccine for polio
On this day, in 1954, children from Arsenal Elementary School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, received the first injections of the new polio vaccine. The disease was highly contagious and attacked nerve cells and sometimes even the central nervous system. The first vaccine had been developed by Dr. Jonas Salk.
