Vaccine proves effective against the most severe type of pneumonia

According to a new study, a pneumococcal vaccine was effective at protecting children in Laos against the most severe type of pneumonia. The project led by the Murdich Children's Research Institute (MCRI), Australia, found that the PCV13-vaccine reduced hypoxic pneumonia and pneumonia requiring oxygen support by 37%. The study involved more than 800 children, up to five years old, admitted to hospital with pneumonia.  

Professor Fiona Russell of the MCRI said: "These results provide a compelling argument to continue childhood PCV13 vaccination in Laos and for its introduction into similar countries with high death rates from pneumonia,"
