EU to block import of materials that drive deforestation

The European Union on Wednesday proposed a measure aimed at restricting imports of goods and materials to combat consumer trends that are driving deforestation around the world. Beef, palm oil, cocoa and other products associated with deforestation will no longer be able to be imported into the European Union in a bid to prevent the deforestation of the world's great forests.

Importers of raw materials such as coffee, cocoa, soy, beef, palm oil and wood, as well as products made from these materials, would be required to specify the geographical coordinates of the land where the materials were produced. To be considered as "deforestation-free", the land must not have been deforested since 31 December 2020.
